"Metekhi Commune" is a story of a small rocky surviving "island" of historical Tbilisi, which was once a royal district surrounded by a wall. The remains of a medieval wall, narrow streets, vaulted cellars, and mezzanine-floored Tbilisi houses give an image of medieval life. Besides, the neighborhood’s multi-ethnicity and open social network create a vibrant urban fabric. The exhibition is part of a research project that was conducted from April to June 2023 in order to study the challenges and needs of Metekhi district population. David Grigoryan a photographer from Odessa/Tbilisi, participated in the research as a photographer. The exhibition presents: David Grigoryan's photos; Graphic texts of excerpts from interviews with residents created by Lei Grigolia at the Graphic Contemporary Center. The design of the poster belongs to Beka Buchashvili. The texts were translated by Nona Tadumadze and Nutsa Chikvaidze. Project curator is Lali Pertenava. The project is supported by the Open Society Foundation.
‘მეტეხის კომუნა’ ისტორიული თბილისის შემორჩენილ პატარა კლდოვან ‘კუნძულს’ ეხება, რომელიც ოდესღაც გალავნით გარშემოტყმული სამეფო უბანი იყო; სადაც, ახლაც იგრძნობა გალავნის ნარჩენების, ვიწრო ქუჩების, თაღოვანი სარდაფების, მეცონინიანი თბილისური სახლების შუასაუკოვანი ცხოვრების რითმი. ამას ერთვის უბნის მრავალეთნიკურობა და ღია სამეზობლო სოციალური ქსელი, რომელიც უბნის ცოცხალ ურბანულ ქსოვილს ქმნის. გამოფენა კვლევითი პროექტის ნაწილია, რომელიც მეტეხის უბნის მოსახლეობის წინაშე არსებული გამოწვევებისა და საჭიროებების შესწავლის მიზნით ჩატარდა 2023 წლის აპრილიდან ივნისამდე. ოდესელი/თბილისელი ფოტოგრაფის დავიდ გრიგორიანი მონაწილეობდა კვლევაში როგორც ფოტოგრაფი. გამოფენაზე წარმოდგენილია: დავიდ გრიგორიანის ფოტოები; ამონარიდები მოსახლეობასთნ ინტერვიუბიდან, რომლის გრაფიკული ტექსტებიც შექმნა ლეი გრიგოლიამ გრაფიკის თანამედროვე ცენტრში. პოსტერის დიზაინი ეკუთვნის ბექა ბუჩაშვილს. ტექსტები თარგმნეს ნონა თადუმაძემ და ნუცა ჩიკვაიძემ. გამოფენის კურატორია ლალი პერტენავა. პროექტის მხარდამჭერია ღია საზოგადოების ფონდი.

…I think that the cellars should not be demolished. I will not sign for you, because it is built with Georgian bricks and it is a miracle. Our historians told us that it is from the time of Agha-Mohammed-Khan, but I doubt that it can be that old. Such cellars are preserved one by one, and the state should take care to preserve them. Then it turns out that "cultural heritage" is just written on paper. If we have appropriate conditions, we will arrange the relations ourselves, because we have very good relations in the neighborhood. These ar the conditions that we don't have.
…Very cheerful, very crowded, people of many nationalities lived. We were like one family, we helped each other, there were fights, but still, we had very good relations with our neighbors. Now we have no neighbors and no one, only hotels, we are with tourists…
…I like to go outside and remember my neighborhood; I like to look at my household. Yes, it is destroyed, but my household, my yard is a great thing for me, it is a great pleasure.
…If anything remains of this area, it is the narrow passageways, of which few survive. Not only mine, but when I walk in the steps of my parents, ancestors, classmates or those parents, I am already happy and these streets still exist.

…Our house had an iron medal, where it was written when the house was built, and it was stuck during the plastering. It was a round medal that expressed the historicity of the house. I live in this house on the second floor. I was born and raised here, my grandfather bought this house, one whole floor was ours.
... The current district of Metekhi is completely unacceptable for me. One or two houses have been preserved, the rest have been completely rebuilt. There are more than 30 hotels in this small area, Tbilisi used to be called Little Paris, and what were they fascinated by? With these old districts: Kala, our district. ... This house is the house my grandfather bought and do you know why he bought it? He bought it for his wife. My grandmother was a very beautiful woman and when she used to visit here, it turns out that she really liked this house and my grandfather bought her this house like a ring. I was born in this house in 1945. It snowed so much that they burnt 3 months of firewood in these three days. I remember times when swayers used to walk in in this area - they saw firewood…
…My ancestors bought this house in 1911. This house was already here, they did not build it. It had an open balcony. The next house is my aunt's house, it was one big plot and it was called "pomestie" (estate) in Russian. There were three of them here: the Akofievs and this one, which was bought from the Armenians, and there was one more. Doctor Abramov, the famous Kondakhsazov, lived on this street, and the yard of Casarova was behind the current Carrefour. There were three famous families and three famous doctors. They had very interesting houses, Kondakhsazov’s had especially beautiful things in the house…
... The street was full of people until late. The old people played, swept the tables and played lotto, and my grandmother often played too. Now the district does not exist, it is dead...
…Now it is time jana (Armenian colloquial), people don't have jobs and that's a concern. We can't even see each other. I work, go and come.

I always thought when you are traveling in a country, walking in old districts, but you haven’t been it someone house, you haven’t been invited as a guest, then you haven’t been really travelling in this country. From tourist trails, everything looks nice and like for a tourist. Especially in a not well-developed country. The same story with Metekhi – the oldest district (uban) of Tbilisi, which somehow still in Tbilisi. Again, facade of Metekhi, from the river side, looks picturesque and it became in a one of Tbilisi symbol and whole Georgia, since centuries. But if you walk through the streets, gaze in any possible holes, you see partly the sings which are gone by one foot into history or let’s say totally gone. As a Tbilisi born person, first time a was here as a kid, but didn`t recognized and didn`t remember that. After collapse of USSR we mowed to Odesa, and I came back to Tbilisi in 1998 for short time just for family things. Then we went to visit our relative Robert Kondokhsazov, (well know Tbilisi’s artist) who lived in Metekhi since he was born. And partly I remember his family house… And I came back to Odesa with art book as a gift from Robert, because since childhood I was interested in drawing. After 20 years past I got know that this house is sold and now there some kind of NGO. In the end of 2022, I move back to my hometown and wanted became part of society and cultural life of Tbilisi. I decided to meet up with the National Trust of Georgia which is based in the house where I was last time 24 years ago… After a few meetings I was invited as a photographer to Metekhi project. Of course, I was happy to join the project and dive in to this district deeper. I visited a few houses as I told earlier which are almost gone but somehow people still live there, I saw how the new hotels growing from old historical houses next to damaged ones and next to ruins of Armenia church which became a partly a car parking. Some people had no other choice then sale their houses to investors and move to other districts of Tbilisi. Both of them – who are moved from here and still live here remembering Metekhi as a truly Tbilisi’s international district, with good neighbor`s relationship who gathered on common supras (feasts), stories, memories. I listen the stories of people who are living here many decades, I saw and photographed their family values, old family photos I drank coffee from old cups, I touched history somehow, and believe me or not - all of them know Kondokhsazov personally. All people who still here wish the same things – restoration of their and demolished houses, new water supply system, at least one park for walking with kids, small sport field, big shop and less hotels… I think Metekhi still international district in terms of hotels which are in former living houses. Here is also a lot of international tourists…
ყოველთვის ვფიქრობდი - როცა რომელიმე ქვეყანაში მოგზაურობ, ძველ უბნებში სეირნობ, თუმცა არ სტუმრობ იქაურ ოჯახს, რომელმაც შინ მიგიწვია, ეს იმას ნიშნავს, რომ სინამდვილეში არც გიმოგზაურიათ ამ ქვეყანაში. ტურისტის თვალისთვის ყველაფერი ტურისტულად ლამაზია, განსაკუთრებით - ნაკლებად განვითარებულ ქვეყნებში მოგზაურობისას. იგივე ეხება მეტეხსაც - თბილისის უძველეს უბანს, რომელიც როგორღაც შემორჩა თბილსს. მდინარის მხრიდან მეტეხის ფასადი თვალწარმტაცად გამოიყურება და ის საუკუნეების მანძილზე თბილისის და მთლიანად საქართველოს ერთ-ერთი სიმბოლოა. როცა აგრძელებ ქუჩებში ხეტიალს, იცქირები ყველა ნაპრალში, ამჩნევ ნაშთებს, რომლებიც უკვე ნაწილობრივ ან სრულიად ისტორიის საკუთრებაა. როგორც თბილისში დაბადებულმა, ბავშვობა აქ გავატარე, მაგრამ ვერ ვიხსენებ, ვერ ვცნობ იმ პერიოდს. საბჭოთა კავშირის დაშლის შემდეგ ჩვენ ოდესაში გადავედით. თბილისში კი მცირე ხნით 1998 წელს დავბრუნდი საოჯახო საქმეებზე. ნათესავს ვესტუმრეთ - რობერტ კონდოხსაზოვს (ცნობილ თბილისელ მხატვარს), რომელიც დაბადებიდან მეტეხთან ცხოვრობდა. მე ბუნდოვნად მახსოვდა მისი მშობლების სახლი... ოდესაში რობერტის ნაჩუქარი წიგნით დავბრუნდი მხატვრობის შესახებ, მას ახსოვდა, რომ მე ბავშვობიდან მაინტერესებდა მხატვრობა. ოცი წლის შემდეგ შევიტყე, რომ ეს სახლი გაყიდულა და იქ ახლა რომელიღაც არასამთავრობო ორგანიზაციაა. 2022 წლის ბოლოს მე ვბრუნდები ჩემს მშობლიურ ქალაქში, მსურს გავხდე მისი საზოგადოების წევრი, ვეზიარო თბილისის კულტურულ ცხოვრებას. გადავწყვიტე, ვწვეოდი საქართველოს ეროვნულ ფონდს, რომელიც იმ სახლშია განთავსებული, სადაც მე ბოლოს 24 წლის წინ ვიყავი.... რამდენიმე შეხვედრის შემდეგ, როგორც ფოტოგრაფი, მიმიწვიეს მეტეხის პროექტში. რა თქმა უნდა, ბედნიერი ვიყავი პროექტში მონაწილებით და შესაძლებლობით, რომ უფრო ღრმად ჩავწვდომოდი ამ უბანს. მე ვესტუმრე რამდენიმე სახლს, რომლებიც როგორც მოგახსენეთ, თითქმის აღარ არსებობს, მაგრამ იქ ხალხი ჯერ კიდევ ცხოვრობს; ვნახე როგორ ამოიზარდა ახალი სასტუმროები ძველი ისტორიული სახლებისა და სომხური ეკლესიის ნანგრევებზე, რომელიც ნაწილობრივ ავტოსადგომად ქცეულა. ადამიანებს სხვა არჩევანი არ ჰქონდათ იმის გარდა, რომ საკუთარი სახლები ინვესტორებისთვის მიეყიდათ და საცხოვრებლად თბილისის სხვა უბნებში გადასულიყვნენ. მათაც, ვინც აქედან გადავიდა და მათაც, ვინც ჯერ კიდევ აქ ცხოვრობს ახსოვთ მეტეხი, როგორც თბილისის ჭეშმარიტად ინტერნაციონალური უბანი: კარგი მეზობლური ურთიერთობებით, საერთო სუფრებით, ისტორიებით, მოგონებებით. მივისმინე იმ ადამიანების ისტორიები, რომლებიც აქ ათწლეულებია ცხოვრობენ; ვნახე და გადავიღე მათი საოჯახო რელიქვიები, ძველი საოჯახო ფოტოები; მივირთვი ყავა ძველი ფინჯნებიდან; რაღაცნაირად შევეხე ისტორიას და თქვენ წარმოიდგინეთ, ყველა მათგანი პირადად იცნობდა კონდოხსაზოვს. ყველა ადამიანი, ვინც ჯერ კიდევ აქ ცხოვრობს, ერთსა და იმავეზე ოცნებობს: მათი ავარიული სახლების რესტავრაციაზე, წყალმომარაგების ახალ სისტემებზე, ერთ პარკზე მაინც, სადაც ბავშვებთან ერთად ისეირნებენ, პატარა სპორტულ მოედანზე, დიდ მაღაზიაზე და ნაკლებ სასტუმროებზე. მე ვფიქრობ, მეტეხი კვლავ ინტერნაციონალური უბანია, იმ სასტუმროებითურთ, რომლებმაც საცხოვრებელი სახლები ჩაანაცვლეს. აქ ახლაც უამრავი საერთაშორისო ტურისტია...
